![]() He and others I talked with were tired of the whole process-of putting themselves out there again and again, just to find that most people are not a match. Al Rosen, a 67-year-old computer engineer living in Long Island, described sending out so many dating-app messages that he had to start keeping notecards with details about each person (likes concerts, enjoys going to wineries) so that he didn’t mix them up on phone calls. In fact, many gay bars have become something else entirely-more of a general social space, as younger gay people have turned to Grindr and other apps for hookups and dates.ĭating apps can be overwhelming for some older adults-or just exhausting. “They were sending me all white men,” she said.īill Gross, a program manager at SAGE-an organization for older LGBTQ adults-told me that the spaces that used to serve the gay community as meeting places for potential partners, such as gay bars, now don’t always feel welcoming to older adults. “And men who aren’t people of color are not that attracted to black women.” She recently stopped using one dating site for this reason. “There aren’t that many black men in my age group that are available,” she explained. The only way she can seem to find a date is through an app, but even then, McNeil told me, dating online later in life, and as a black woman, has been terrible. ![]() Now her friends don’t seem to have anyone to recommend for her, and she senses that it’s no longer acceptable to approach strangers. “So many wonderful dates.” She met her former husband when she went to brunch by herself and saw him reading a newspaper she asked whether she could share it. “I went on so many blind dates,” she said, reminiscing about her 20s and 30s. Wendy McNeil, a 64-year-old divorcée who works in fundraising, told me that she misses the old kind of dating, when she’d happen upon cute strangers in public places or get paired up by friends and colleagues. Getting back out there can be difficult, though. Read: Why it’s so hard for young people to date offline “Some people might not have thought about repartnering,” notes Linda Waite, a sociologist at the University of Chicago. But that longer lifespan also means that older adults, more than ever before, have years ahead of them to spark new relationships. And as people are living longer, the divorce rate for those 50 or older is rising. Throughout their adult life, their generation has had higher rates of separation and divorce, and lower rates of marriage in the first place, than the generations that preceded them. ![]() She’s in good company: More than one-third of Baby Boomers aren’t currently married. “You’re thrust out into this cyberworld after the refuge of being in a marriage that-even if it wasn’t wonderful-was the norm. She tried to use dating apps, but the experience felt bizarre and daunting. Her marriage of 33 years had recently ended, and she didn’t know any single men her age in Longview, Texas, where she lives. When Rhonda Lynn Way was in her 50s and on the dating scene for the first time since she was 21, she had no idea where to start.

He scuffled through a series of hard-luck bar bands, including a glitter-rock outfit with Larry Crane called Trash, which played only four gigs over a whole year. “But you can’t take away the fact that as far as what’s going on right now, I care about it.”īorn in Seymour, Indiana (population 15,050), on October 7th, 1951, the second of five children, John Mellencamp wanted to be a rock & roller in the worst way, and that’s exactly why he made it. “Yeah, John Mellencamp has a history of being the biggest joke in rock & roll, right?” he snaps. He helped organize the September 22nd Farm Aid concert with Willie Nelson and Neil Young, and in his own shows he asks fans to write to their congressmen demanding legislative action. He turned down an offer to play at Live Aid – “Concerts that just raise money aren’t a good idea” – but he has devoted much of his nonmusical energy to publicizing the plight of American farmers. Instead of relocating to a superstar community like New York or Los Angeles, he stays in Indiana, where he keeps tight with relatives, old school buddies and biker pals. Sobered by success ( Scarecrow is his third straight platinum LP), Mellencamp has replaced the chip on his shoulder with the weight of private and public responsibility. If something’s not right at a sound check, John will look at me and say, ‘Aw, do I really have to get mad at somebody today?”‘ Indeed, considering his reputation, Mellencamp was unexpectedly relaxed and thoughtful during the two sessions for this interview, backstage in Binghamton, New York, and in his Manhattan hotel suite. “He liked the rush of getting angry, but not anymore. “I don’t think he enjoys that emotion anymore,” says guitarist Larry Crane, who has played with Mellencamp for almost fifteen years. ‘This guy might not like me, so I’m going to not-like him first.’ It’s a real juvenile way of thinking, but that’s the way I functioned in my life for years.” “If you’d come in here then, I wouldn’t have wanted to like you. (Financially, he stood to lose nearly $350,000 from his refund offer, but only half the fans returned their tickets.) The thirty-four-year-old Indiana singer just sat in his dressing room until the sound problem was solved and then returned to the stage, where he told the crowd, “I feel so bad about this that if you got your ticket stub, you got your money back.” He sweetened the deal by playing for another two hours, venting his anger through ferocious renditions of his biggest hits and a long medley of Sixties nuggets. He didn’t storm offstage muttering obscenities, like he did that same year during an on-camera fracas with a CBS News interviewer. He didn’t throw drummer Kenny Aronoff’s kit into the crowd the way he did during a legendary tantrum at a London, Ontario, concert in 1982. And on this, one of the most important nights of his career, his expensive, highly sophisticated sound system went kaput not once but twice, thanks to a faulty fifty-dollar circuit breaker.īut Mellencamp didn’t blow any fuses. Nearly 20,000 fans had paid $17.50 a ticket to see the small-town boy play the biggest room in New York, Madison Square Garden. John Cougar Mellencamp had every right to be angry.

![]() NYU Students are able to access ATLAS.ti for free via the the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL). Duplicating a code can be a useful option to clean up or modify a code system. ATLAS.ti is a qualitative research tool that can be used for coding and analyzing transcripts & field notes, building literature reviews, creating network diagrams, and data visualization. The duplicated code is a perfect clone of the original code including color, comment, code-quotation links, code memo links and code-code links. It is also possible to duplicate codes with all its linkages. Deleting it will remove all occurrences in the margin (and from all other contexts in which it was engaged, like networks, groups, etc.). Renaming the code will instantly change all the code links in the margin to reflect the new name. The effect of the operation is local.īy renaming or removing a code from a project, you are affecting every occurrence of the code throughout the entire project. The default name for the bundle will be the project name plus the name of the currently logged-in user, and the date: project name (username YYYY-MM-DD.) You can rename the project bundle file at this stage. All other occurrences of the same code are untouched. It only affects one coding, i.e., one specific occurrence of the code. If you have an installation of ATLAS.ti 9, ATLAS.ti 22 on your computer and install ATLAS.ti 23, your library will be automatically copied to the new version. Removing a coding in the margin area (i.e., unlinking the code) is like erasing a word in the margin of a paper document with an eraser. Technically speaking, these are links between a quotation represented by a blue bar and the code, represented by its name and icon. In fact, you are seeing the codings for this code. In the margin are, you may see the code appear many times while scrolling through your document. For both operations you must understand, that there is only ONE code, for example 'source of happiness: children' in a given project, even if you applied this code many times. You can now connect a folder to a MAXQDA project in the new automatic import. Renaming and deleting codes are procedures that seem trivial, but understanding the scope of these operations can be a problem for new users. Fixes an issue while renaming code sets in the Document System where. Diligent boards sign in1/28/2024 They also outperformed the bottom 20% by 17 points, or 15%. The May 2019 report by the Diligent Institute measured governance practices related to shareholder rights, board composition, independence and compensation.Ĭompanies with good governance, as identified by the top 20%, outpaced the S&P 500 index. The modern governance approach strongly supports board decision-making best practices. Today's leaders lack the tools to communicate, collaborate and share sensitive data securely. Modern Governance and Board Decision-Making Best Practices During times of major decisions, boards should have every opportunity to request and receive additional information so they can try to explore every possible alternative. Some decisions should come to the board because they touch on the company's core values. When many perspectives get added to a board discussion, it can open up new ideas and ways of understanding things. These are the types of situations that support the emphasis on composing a diverse board. The board's collective wisdom can prove to be invaluable. There are some other important reasons to take certain decisions to the board for input and consideration. As new issues arise, they force the board to review how they think about dividing areas for decisions.īoard Decision-Making Best Practices for Taking a Decision to the Board Major decisions include things like acquiring a new operation, divesting an underperforming division or entering a new market are all board decisions. Major decisions that will impact or change the future and those that may impact the strategic plan should be given to the board's attention. In most cases, the CEO will make these calls based on informal norms that they've established over time.Ĭertain types of issues may signal that it's time to involve the board. Communication between boards and executives are also very important during these times. These are the times that it's a good idea to have some basic rules of thumb. Unfortunately, the nature of business is that unusual situations can and do arise unexpectedly that don't fit squarely into one area of responsibility or another. It's good to have formal practices and protocols in writing for everyday situations. A statement of formal delegation of authority lists the decisions that must be brought to the board for final resolution. ![]() In recent years, in the interest of transparency, some boards are making their decision-making structures available publicly. ![]() Typically, the policy for decisions that the board makes, as well as those that the management team makes, are confidential. Boards can set up the division authority according to their liking. Among the many matters that boards must consider throughout the year include:īoards should have some sort of a system by which they can explicitly identify which decisions will typically be made by board directors and which decisions will be made by the management team. Your company's annual calendar is a good place to start when setting up the structure for a board's decision-making. Setting Up the Agenda Around the Annual Calendar Where boards aren't sure if they're ready to take a formal vote on something, they have the option of taking a straw poll. Board directors shouldn't be expected to vote on any issue before they're ready. A particular board meeting strategy that some boards use is to put major items for decision early on the agenda when the board is fresh and not weary after a long meeting.Įven where agenda items that require decisions appear early in the agenda, the board still requires ample time to ask questions, request additional information and get answers. The agenda should always indicate which agenda items require the board to make a decision. For other decisions, they just need to be informed. Setting Up the Right Structure for Decision-Making AuthorityĬertain decisions require boards to be the decision-makers. In addition to looking for human resources, boards can also rely on some formal processes and informal principles to improve the quality of their decision-making. Other board directors, certain investors and researchers on governance best practices are a few of the best resources for good board decision-making for their companies. While, in other types of industries and positions, managers and leaders have multiple opportunities to find mentors and examples of good leadership, boards have fewer options for how to improve their craft. ![]() When they can be assured that the leaders adhere to board decision-making best practices, they have greater confidence in the board. It's right and fair for shareholders and regulators to have some idea of what the board is doing however, they're not privy to everything. While many of the board's decisions are either visible or public, many of the decisions that boards make are confidential and never leave the boardroom. For better or worse, the decisions that boards make help to shape the company's future.

Insecticides and pesticides project1/28/2024 ![]() ![]() While such bans are crucial to reducing pesticide use, governments must also promote safer alternatives. In September, South Africa announced plans to phase out Highly Hazardous Pesticides by June 2024. Importing countries have also taken steps in the right direction: Tunisia, Mexico, and the Palestinian Authority have banned imports of pesticides that are forbidden in the exporting or producing country. And Germany has recently reaffirmed its commitment to passing legislation prohibiting exports of hazardous pesticides. In France, a law forbidding the manufacture, storage, and export of EU-banned pesticides was enacted in January. Two years ago, Switzerland banned the export of five highly toxic pesticides. Fortunately, European regulators have begun to crack down. Similarly, personal protective equipment is often unavailable, too expensive, or unsuitable for warm climates.Ĭivil-society organizations have long urged governments to address the pesticide double standard. But, because most farmers’ plots are smaller than two acres and closely situated, it is impossible to implement protective measures such as creating buffer zones. In Kenya, for example, 76% of the pesticides in use contain active ingredients that are categorized as highly hazardous, and almost half of the pesticides used in the country are banned in Europe. Because small-scale farmers are often unaware of the dangers of chemical-based pest controls, it is important to provide information about how to mitigate the risks associated with pesticide use and enable them to seek safer alternatives.īut awareness campaigns on their own are unlikely to remove the harmful effects of using hazardous pesticides. Hazardous pesticides are particularly damaging to farmers in developing countries with weak environmental and safety regulations. Moreover, women tend to have much greater exposure to pesticides than men and are more vulnerable to pollution-related illnesses. According to UN experts, these toxic substances endanger people’s rights to food, health, and a clean environment, particularly in developing countries. The United Nations has long considered Highly Hazardous Pesticides a global human-rights concern. And European companies such as BASF, Bayer, and Syngenta continue to sell them to low- and middle-income countries, where approval requirements are often less stringent and regulatory authorities are understaffed.Īccess every new PS commentary, our entire On Point suite of subscriber-exclusive content – including Longer Reads, Insider Interviews, Big Picture/Big Question, and Say More – and the full PS archive. While many of these hazardous pesticides have been banned in Europe, they account for over one-third of the sales of the world’s five largest pesticide manufacturers. In particular, the publication highlights the growing use of toxic herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides like glyphosate, imidacloprid, and carbendazim to cultivate soybeans, corn, sugarcane, and grapevines. The Heinrich Böll Foundation’s recent Pesticide Atlas sheds light on the dangers these highly hazardous substances pose to the environment and to public health. In the past few years, the EU has focused on Highly Hazardous Pesticides, banning dozens of active ingredients that may cause acute or chronic health problems and destroy critical biodiversity. The European Union’s Farm to Fork Strategy, part of its Green New Deal, aims to reduce pesticide use and risk by 50% by 2030. Reducing the use of toxic pesticides is an important first step toward sustainable food production. In the past, low- and middle-income countries subsidized such inputs, but soaring inflation has made subsidies too costly, contributing to the sharp rise in food prices. Dependency on fossil-fuel-based agricultural inputs, such as synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, has made conventional farming more expensive for many around the world. The global food crisis, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has highlighted the urgent need to transform our vulnerable food systems. Clearly the answer cannot be found in using more pesticides. But up to 828 million people – more than 10% of the world’s population – still go to bed hungry every night. Pesticide manufacturers often claim that their products are crucial to combating global hunger. In 2017, global pesticide use had grown to four million tons per year, an increase of nearly 81% since 1990. And yet, despite these negative effects, industrial agriculture still relies on pesticide use. |
